In a significant development for the city of Aurora, crews have commenced work on a new public park at the former SeaWorld site located at Geauga Lake. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Thursday, marking the start of a project that aims to revitalize the 47-acre area, which has remained largely unused since the park’s closure in 2007.

The initial phase of construction will focus on renovating existing amenities, including the gatehouses, pier, and pavilion. Additionally, the project will introduce a kayak launch for rentals and create an open grassy area for community use. According to Aurora Mayor Anne Womer Benjamin, “We expect to have a beautiful grassy area right along the lake for picnics, fun, frisbees, and general enjoyment, and that’s about 15 acres of development of this former park land.”

Plans for Future Development

Beyond the first phase, conceptual designs released earlier this year depict further enhancements to the park. Planned features include a beach, walking trails, and the reimagining of the iconic wave pool — though it will no longer produce waves. Aurora Councilman George Horvat expressed his hope that the park will create lasting memories for future generations, stating, “I hope my kids and everyone else’s kids and grandchildren will be able to enjoy this park as I did in the past.”

The property has been a source of concern for the community since the closure of the amusement park and its water park, Wildwater Kingdom, in 2016. Over the years, the area has fallen into disrepair, attracting vandalism and trespassing. In recent months, crews have been engaged in clearing out some of the dilapidated buildings on the site.

John Kudley, director of the Aurora Historical Society & Museum, highlighted the enduring affection for Geauga Lake. He noted that he has conducted numerous presentations focused on the park’s history, which consistently draw interest. “It’s exciting that people still want to remember the park, and it brings back vivid memories,” he remarked.

Ongoing Developments in the Area

The park project is part of a broader initiative to revitalize the 377-acre site that spans both Bainbridge Township and Aurora. In 2023, the grocery chain Meijer purchased 16 acres of land within this space, where attractions such as the main gate and the X-Flight ride were once located. A spokesperson for Meijer indicated that construction on the new store is expected to begin soon, with an estimated opening date in 2026.

The transformation of the Geauga Lake area reflects a commitment to restoring a once-popular destination for families and visitors alike. As construction progresses, local officials and community members remain optimistic about the potential of the new park to enhance the quality of life in Aurora.
