Whitman School Unveils New Master’s Degree in Real Estate

The Whitman School at Syracuse University has announced the launch of a new Master of Science in Real Estate, set to begin in fall 2026. This innovative program aims to equip graduates with the skills necessary for a rapidly evolving real estate industry, emphasizing finance, sustainability, and development.
Program Overview and Structure
The one-year, on-campus degree is designed to build on the strengths of Whitman’s existing undergraduate real estate program. The curriculum will cover 30 credits and includes specialized courses in areas such as real estate finance, development, and sustainability. Students can choose to complete the program at an accelerated pace or extend their studies for greater flexibility.
According to Milena Petrova, professor of real estate and finance and director of the real estate program, the curriculum reflects the industry’s changing landscape. Students will also engage in electives related to sustainability, infrastructure, and real estate law. A significant feature of the program is a group capstone project, the Green Real Estate Competition, which involves a simulated competition on selecting sustainable real estate stocks.
Real-World Experience and Networking Opportunities
A strong emphasis on experiential learning is central to the program. Students will gain hands-on experience using industry-standard software like ARGUS Enterprise and will participate in national student competitions. Connections with professionals will be facilitated through the Whitman Real Estate Club and the James D. Kuhn Real Estate Center.
The program will also offer an annual immersion program in New York City, providing students with insider access to leading real estate firms and networking opportunities with established professionals. This initiative is crucial, as it allows students to engage with a robust alumni network that spans various sectors within real estate.
Interim Dean Alex McKelvie expressed enthusiasm for the new program, stating, “The face of real estate has changed dramatically in recent years, moving toward a model where a background in finance, business analytics, entrepreneurship, and environmental sustainability are vital components.” He emphasized that the program positions Whitman to create value and prepare job-ready professionals for the industry.
Applications for the inaugural cohort of the M.S. in Real Estate are now open. Interested candidates can find more information on the Whitman School’s website. This new degree represents a significant step forward in preparing future leaders in the real estate sector, addressing the growing demand for expertise in a field that is continuously evolving.
