Florida’s Executive Director for the Division of Emergency Management, Kevin Guthrie, publicly criticized Democratic lawmakers this week for allegedly misrepresenting conditions at the new detention facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz.” Guthrie’s comments came during an appearance on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime” on October 16, 2023, where he discussed what he described as theatrical attempts by some legislators to create political controversy.

During a recent tour of the facility, which hosted over 60 lawmakers, Guthrie noted that some of the complaints made by the visiting officials were exaggerated. He stated that the event was “very taxing” and highlighted instances where lawmakers appeared to focus on fabricated issues. When asked if any legislators were trying to “create controversy,” Guthrie responded, “Absolutely.”

One notable incident involved a lawmaker using an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature near a light bulb, claiming it reached 110 degrees. Guthrie pointed out the inaccuracy of the measurement, suggesting they should instead check the ambient air temperature.

Guthrie also addressed criticisms regarding the facility’s toilet setup. He confirmed that the system in place not only meets but exceeds both national and state standards. “This is a standard lock-up toilet system found in any secured facility,” he explained. He emphasized that the facility is equipped with both a toilet and a sink, stating, “You do both of those things. Whether you use a restroom or you brush your teeth in a restroom.”

In addition to the facilities, Guthrie responded to comments made by Democratic Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz regarding the quality of food served at the facility. She criticized the appearance of a turkey sandwich, which was not visible to her during the tour. Guthrie remarked, “Well, she was about six feet away from that turkey sandwich box, that was in a wrapper, [so] I don’t know how she could tell it was gray.” He further compared the sandwiches served to those provided in hospitals and under former First Lady Michelle Obama‘s school lunch program, stating, “Individuals that go to a hospital…are getting the exact same thing.”

The remarks highlight the ongoing tension between state officials and Democratic lawmakers regarding federal immigration enforcement. Guthrie stated that many Democratic leaders oppose strict immigration laws, likely due to concerns about their voter base. He reinforced that those who violate federal immigration law and commit violent crimes should not expect leniency, labeling the facility as a prison with consequences for unlawful behavior.

In closing, Guthrie asserted the importance of adhering to immigration laws, stating, “If people don’t want to go there, then they should follow the law. Come to America the right way.” His comments reflect a broader discussion about immigration policies and the treatment of detainees in the current political climate.
