Sales of fully electric vehicles from Chinese automaker BYD soared by 37% in July 2025 compared to the same month last year. This significant growth highlights a positive trend in the company’s electric vehicle segment, even as overall passenger vehicle sales showed only a marginal increase of 0.1% during the same period.

Despite the overall stabilization in vehicle sales growth, BYD’s figures reveal a notable shift in consumer preference. While sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) surged, sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) experienced a sharp decline of 22.7% in July. This trend raises questions about the future of PHEVs as more consumers lean towards fully electric options.

Looking at the broader picture for the first seven months of 2025, BYD’s fully electric vehicle sales have increased by 40.3%, demonstrating strong demand in the BEV market. In contrast, PHEV sales also remained positive, but with a more modest growth rate of 14.8%. Overall, BYD’s passenger vehicle sales are up by 26% year-to-date, showcasing the brand’s resilience in a competitive market.

The declining figures for PHEVs could suggest a shifting landscape in consumer preferences, with many opting for the benefits of fully electric vehicles, such as lower operating costs and environmental concerns. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, BYD’s strong performance in the BEV segment reflects a growing acceptance and adoption of electric mobility.

Analysts will be closely watching these trends as BYD navigates its future product lineup. While the company has indicated that it will continue to support PHEVs, the current sales data may influence strategic decisions regarding the emphasis on fully electric vehicles moving forward.

This shift in consumer behavior may also impact BYD’s competition strategy, as other manufacturers explore similar transitions in their product offerings. With the global automotive market increasingly focused on sustainability, BYD’s robust BEV sales could position the company favorably in the long term.
