Jon Miyahara, known for his role as the stoic Cloud 9 employee Brett Kobashigawa on NBC’s workplace comedy Superstore, has died at the age of 83. His passing was confirmed by cast member Colton Dunn on Instagram, although details regarding the cause and exact date of death were not disclosed. Dunn expressed his sorrow, stating that Miyahara was “a really awesome guy” whose silent performances left a lasting impact on the series.

Miyahara’s character, Brett, appeared in all but eight episodes of Superstore, which aired from 2015 to 2021. Known for his mostly silent demeanor, Miyahara’s deadpan expressions often punctuated the show’s comedic moments. His only notable line of dialogue, “Oh, shit,” occurred during a dramatic tornado scene that put the store in jeopardy. This moment has become a fan favorite, showcasing Miyahara’s ability to convey emotion with minimal words.

Miyahara’s Impact on the Show and Colleagues’ Tributes

The tornado storyline in Season 2 provided one of Miyahara’s most memorable plotlines. In a twist of fate, the other employees mistakenly believe that Brett has been swept away by the storm, prompting a memorial service featuring Kaliko Kauahi’s character, Sandra, performing Radiohead’s “Creep.” When Season 3 premiered, Brett returned to his job as if nothing had happened, reflecting the show’s quirky humor.

Born Jonathan Yasushi Miyahara on August 8, 1941, in Los Angeles, Miyahara briefly reprised his role in a cameo on NBC’s American Auto, another sitcom created by Justin Spitzer. Despite his limited dialogue, Miyahara’s presence was widely appreciated by fans and colleagues alike.

Following Dunn’s announcement, former co-stars shared their condolences on social media. Kelly Stables, who played Kelly, described Miyahara as “always so sweet.” Irene White, who portrayed Carol, called him “an incredible man,” while Michael Bunin, who played Jeff, expressed his sadness, recalling the enjoyable times they shared on set.

Miyahara’s ability to communicate through subtle expressions made him a unique and cherished part of the Superstore ensemble. His contributions to the series will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike, marking a significant loss in the entertainment community.
