UPDATE: A new community-driven initiative, Adair County Healthy Connections, has just launched in Greenfield, Iowa, aiming to enhance mental well-being and foster deeper connections among residents. Spearheaded by Whitney Lewis, this organization is a direct response to the growing need for mental health support following the devastating tornado earlier this year.

Just announced, Healthy Connections is part of Project Recovery Iowa, which provided essential mental health services in the wake of the tornado. After the project’s grant funding ended, Lewis felt compelled to continue her mission. “I would rather put my efforts back into our community,” Lewis stated. “My vision is that Healthy Connections will have longevity here.”

This initiative has quickly garnered support from various sectors, including local hospitals, schools, and churches. “There are lots of connections,” said Pastor Melinda Stonebraker of Greenfield United Methodist Church. The organization aims to create a comprehensive network to address mental health needs, evolving as the community’s requirements change.

The urgency for mental health resources in Greenfield has been underscored by the aftermath of the tornado. The Greater Greenfield Community Foundation reported a significant increase in requests for mental health assistance, highlighting the emotional struggles many residents face. Stonebraker emphasized, “We haven’t done a great job of teaching people to understand our emotions.”

To kickstart its activities, Healthy Connections hosted a community barbecue earlier this summer and is set to continue with its Community Conversations program. The next session will take place on August 25 at Greenfield United Methodist Church. This event aims to facilitate open dialogue and understanding among community members, bridging gaps between different age groups.

“Through community engagement, we can be a better community,” said Amanda Rivera, a participant in the initiative. “It’s about understanding each other in a different way.” The growing focus on mental health and community support reflects an urgent need for belonging and connection in these challenging times.
