Urgent Update: Durango’s Historic Aquatic Center to be Demolished

UPDATE: The Durango-La Plata Aquatic Center, a community landmark since its opening in August 1958, is set to be demolished as part of the city’s Fairgrounds Redevelopment Plan adopted in December 1999. This urgent decision follows years of declining usage and escalating maintenance costs, making the pool’s continued operation unsustainable.
Located adjacent to the Fairgrounds on land previously owned by F.W. Kroeger, the aquatic center served the residents of La Plata County for more than 40 years. Civic leaders and nine local organizations united to create this essential recreational facility, which has been a gathering place for families and a source of community pride.
As the city of Durango moves forward with this redevelopment, community members are expressing deep concern over the loss of a cherished recreational space. The aquatic center provided a safe haven for swimmers of all ages and was a vital resource for local swim teams and summer programs.
In light of this imminent change, many residents are rallying to voice their opinions and seek alternatives that could preserve some aspects of the facility or provide new recreational opportunities in the area.
Officials have confirmed that once the demolition begins, it will pave the way for new developments aimed at revitalizing the Fairgrounds area and attracting more visitors to Durango.
Residents and stakeholders are urged to stay informed about upcoming community discussions regarding the future of the Fairgrounds and new recreational initiatives. As this situation unfolds, the emotional impact on the community is palpable, with many reflecting on the memories forged at the aquatic center.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
