URGENT UPDATE: The Cantilever Bar fire near Lytton has not expanded over the past two days, offering a glimmer of hope in ongoing wildfire efforts. According to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), the blaze currently spans just over 1,200 hectares and has stabilized thanks to favorable weather conditions.

Paula Walbauer, an information officer with BCWS, confirmed that recent cooler temperatures, hovering around 32°C, combined with increased humidity, are aiding firefighting efforts. “These conditions allow our firefighters to work more effectively on the ground,” Walbauer stated.

Fire crews are battling the flames with an intensive response team of 77 firefighters and 7 helicopters, focusing on critical areas to prevent further spread. They are working tirelessly, day and night, to protect roads and communities in the vicinity.

Despite over 35,000 lightning strikes recorded across British Columbia in recent days, Walbauer clarified that these have not contributed to the Cantilever Bar fire, which is suspected to be human-caused. This development raises concerns as nearby regions remain under threat.

The fire is highly visible from the Trans Canada Highway, prompting authorities to advise motorists to exercise extreme caution while traveling in the area. “We want everyone to stay safe while our crews are working in close proximity to Highway 1,” Walbauer urged.

First discovered on July 28, the Cantilever Bar wildfire is situated approximately 10 kilometers south of Lytton, on the west side of the Fraser River. Currently, there are nearly 140 active wildfires across the province, with 61 classified as out of control.

This wildfire situation remains dynamic, and further updates are anticipated as crews continue their efforts. Stay tuned for more breaking news on the wildfires affecting British Columbia and their ongoing impact on communities.
