UPDATE: Patton High School in Morganton, North Carolina, is officially set to field a varsity football team this fall after a suspension of the program last season. Head coach Billy Whisenant confirmed that a robust turnout of 30-35 players has participated in summer workouts, positioning the program to not only compete at the varsity level but also field a junior varsity (JV) team.

Coach Whisenant emphasized the importance of this opportunity for his players, stating, “Our plan is to run, particularly a varsity season all year.” The team’s commitment to both levels of play reflects their readiness to rise from last year’s challenges, where the absence of a varsity team left many upperclassmen craving competition.

Patton High’s football program faced difficulties last year due to a lack of players, particularly in the junior and senior classes. “My junior class last year, I had one (player),” Whisenant revealed, highlighting the impact that low numbers had on the team’s viability. However, the tide has turned, and the coach is optimistic about the upcoming season.

With a roster that includes five to seven juniors, Whisenant is confident that his players are prepared to tackle the challenges of varsity competition. “There’s going to be a jump, we recognize that, but I feel they are ready to compete,” he stated. This renewed enthusiasm comes after a 5-3 record for the JV team last season, showcasing the potential for success.

The players have had ample time to develop their skills, with many having logged significant playing time last season. Whisenant noted, “They got a lot of reps last year. We played eight games and the majority of them pretty much played every snap.” This experience is crucial as they transition to the varsity level.

Despite the challenges that come with a predominantly young team, with only three seniors on the roster, Whisenant believes the program is in a much stronger position than it was last summer. The coach is particularly proud of the team’s fight and resilience, stating, “The one thing you’ll see with my team, is they fight. They fight to the bitter end, and they hate to lose.”

As the season approaches, the community can expect a renewed spirit from the Patton High football program. Whisenant’s vision for a competitive and thriving team is not just about wins and losses, but also about fostering a love for the game among young athletes.

Stay tuned for more updates as Patton High prepares for its upcoming football season, which promises to be filled with excitement and determination.
