New ‘Dragon King’ Series to Continue Legacy of ‘The Dragon Prince’

Wonderstorm has announced a new animated series titled The Dragon King, set to continue the narrative of its popular show, The Dragon Prince. This revelation came during San Diego Comic-Con, capturing the attention of fans eager to see how the story unfolds. The sequel is positioned as a follow-up to the original series, taking place seven years after the conclusion of the seventh season, which wrapped in late 2024.

In The Dragon King, the now-teenage character Ezran, along with his dragon companion Zym, is faced with the challenges of maintaining a “fragile peace” in the realm of Xadia. The tranquility is disrupted when a new dragon prince emerges from exile, prompting Zym to question the legitimacy of his claim to the throne. This development sets the stage for a potential conflict over power and identity, as characters from the original series return to navigate their adult lives and confront more intricate challenges.

The new series is being marketed as an adult animated show, contrasting with its predecessor, which primarily targeted younger audiences. Wonderstorm aims to broaden the appeal of the franchise, creating a “gateway” for newcomers while also serving as the third arc in the overall Dragon Prince saga.

To bring this project to fruition, Wonderstorm is launching a Kickstarter campaign aimed at securing the necessary funding. The studio intends to find “the right partners who can meet all the funding needs to bring a world-class series to life.” This campaign will offer fans “unique ways” to engage in the development process, allowing them to feel a part of the creative journey.

In a bid to excite the existing fanbase, Wonderstorm has confirmed that original voice actors Jack De Sena and Dante Basco will reprise their roles as Callum and Zym, respectively. Additionally, actor Liam O’Brien from Critical Role is set to join the cast, portraying the exiled dragon prince.
