Ryan Reynolds Roasts Rob McElhenney at Just for Laughs Awards

The 2025 Just for Laughs awards took place in Montreal on March 15, where actor Ryan Reynolds delivered a humorous tribute to fellow comedian and Wrexham AFC co-owner Rob McElhenney. Recognized with a Generation Award, McElhenney was celebrated for his contributions to comedy, with Reynolds injecting his signature wit into the proceedings.
As Reynolds took the stage, he humorously remarked, “Rob, second place to the lifetime achievement award, amazing.” This comment followed the presentation of a lifetime achievement trophy to comedian George Wallace. Reynolds emphasized the importance of character in the entertainment industry, calling it “an insipid shithouse of round-the-clock shamelessness.” He stressed the need for creatives who possess the determination to pursue their dreams, insisting that McElhenney embodies those qualities.
Reynolds further acknowledged McElhenney’s impressive career, stating, “Nobody does 17 seasons of a television show with the same cast and crew and also happens to be a dick,” referencing McElhenney’s long-running role in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The actor concluded by crediting McElhenney for the success of the series Welcome to Wrexham, reinforcing their partnership in both life and business.
When McElhenney joined Reynolds on stage, he shared his own journey into comedy, recalling the “terrified little boy” inside him. He expressed gratitude towards Reynolds for supporting his career, stating, “I’m here because of Ryan Reynolds, who not only took my career in the stratosphere but also flew here to give this to me.” His heartfelt tribute included thanks to his wife, Kaitlin Olson, and the Wrexham community, concluding with a passionate acknowledgment of the audience’s support.
The awards ceremony, hosted by Matthew Broussard, featured a variety of standout moments, including a candid reflection from comedian Benito Skinner, known for his online persona Benny Drama. As he received the breakout comedy star of the year award, Skinner humorously noted, “I still avoid eye contact with comedians, and I think you should too. We are all mentally ill.” His acknowledgment of the challenges faced by comedians resonated with many in attendance.
Another highlight was Hannah Berner, who won the rising comedy star award. She credited Just for Laughs for boosting her confidence, saying, “JFL has been so incredible to me and to all the comics who took me under their wings.” Berner’s words underscored the supportive environment fostered by the festival.
Female comedians Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin received the podcast of the year award for their offering aimed at LGBTQ+ fans, which they presented on behalf of co-host Tig Notaro. Martin expressed the significance of their achievement, noting, “For our community, representation is still very much needed and wanted.” Feimster added, “It’s cool to be talking about these different topics,” highlighting the importance of diverse voices in comedy.
Wallace, who received a lifetime achievement award, entertained the audience with his trademark humor. Reflecting on his lengthy career, he remarked, “That means you’ve been around for a while and know a few things. And I know a few things.” He shared a lighthearted anecdote about his aspirations, joking, “I said God, let me be the greatest bullshitter in the world. And he said, well, Donald Trump beat you to that.”
The Just for Laughs festival, renowned for celebrating comedic talent, continues through to Sunday, promising more unforgettable moments and laughter.
