URGENT UPDATE: The city of Floyd, Iowa received a significant financial boost for its pickleball court project, with a $25,000 grant awarded on July 18, 2023, by the Iowa Economic Development Authority. This funding accelerates the development of two new courts at Lions Park, enhancing recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
Construction is already underway, as Heartland Asphalt has begun site preparations, including moving dirt and laying a gravel base in the last week. This project aims to transform a portion of Lions Park, making it a community hub for pickleball enthusiasts of all ages.
The total budget for the project is estimated at $85,000, which includes costs for fencing, lighting, and amenities to support both casual and league play. Mayor Trevis O’Connell emphasized that the goal of the Lions Park Pickleball Courts Project is to enhance the quality of life and physical well-being for residents in Floyd and surrounding areas.
With this grant, the city’s fundraising campaign is gaining momentum. The project budget includes approximately $9,000 for site preparation, $31,900 for construction, and $42,600 for equipment and lighting. Currently, the city is just $2,620 short of its fundraising goal, thanks to substantial local support.
Major contributions leading to this achievement include $10,000 from the Floyd County Community Foundation, $10,000 from the First Security Foundation, and $5,000 from the First Citizens Foundation. As the community rallies behind this initiative, the project is poised to foster increased physical activity and strengthen neighborhood ties.
“We all know there will be an increase in physical activity and neighborhood camaraderie for the public,” stated Mike Zelenak, chairman of the Lions Park Pickleball Project. The Floyd City Council has unanimously endorsed the project, highlighting its importance to community health and engagement.
The city plans to attract players from nearby Mason City and Charles City through organized league play, further boosting local tourism and community involvement. The grant application noted that the pickleball courts will serve as a vital local amenity, promoting a livable and recreational community.
In addition to the playing surface, the budget covers essential features such as fencing, benches, sidewalks, lighting, and landscaping. Donations to support the project are tax-deductible and can be sent to the City of Floyd at PO Box 159, Floyd, IA 50435.
