UPDATE: A stunning new mural honoring Fernando Valenzuela was unveiled at Dodger Stadium on October 14, 2023, just nine months after his passing. This vibrant artwork, created by Mexican American artist Robert Vargas, captures Valenzuela tipping his cap while wearing a Dodgers Mexican-heritage jersey, symbolizing unity and pride within the Latino community.
The mural depicts Valenzuela in a Dodgers jersey with a green sleeve, red sleeve, and white center, alongside two striking images of him in his iconic pitching stance. Vargas emphasized the mural’s significance, stating, “I felt it very important to show that the Latino community has a place within these walls.”
Valenzuela, known for igniting Fernandomania during his time with the Dodgers from 1980 to 1990, earned both rookie of the year and Cy Young honors in 1981. His journey from the small town of Etchohuaquila, Mexico, to Major League Baseball resonates deeply with fans, particularly those from Latino backgrounds.
As fans gathered at the stadium, many expressed their emotional connections to Valenzuela. Claudio Campo, who traveled from Phoenix with his son to celebrate the boy’s 11th birthday, shared, “He was a staple for the people that didn’t have anything… anything is possible if you go ahead and revive what you are.” Campo proudly displayed his tattoo of Valenzuela’s nickname, “El Toro,” on his arm.
Longtime Dodgers fan Dulce Gonzalez also reflected on Valenzuela’s impact. She described him as a pivotal figure in her baseball journey, stating, “He was the first Latino player I could truly connect with and be proud of.” Gonzalez’s son, Nicolas, wore a red and green Dodgers jersey, recalling how Valenzuela helped heal the wounds of displacement for many Mexican American families in the area.
Fans, many holding Valenzuela bobbleheads given away at the event, posed for pictures in front of the mural, celebrating a player who transformed their connection to the game. Gonzalez added, “I feel a little bit more connected [to baseball] because I am Latina.”
As the Dodgers honor Valenzuela’s legacy, this mural serves as a reminder of his lasting influence not just as a player, but as a beacon of hope and representation for generations of fans. The celebration of this mural marks a significant moment in the ongoing relationship between the Dodgers and the Latino community, ensuring that Valenzuela’s spirit will continue to inspire.
The Dodgers are expected to host further events to commemorate Valenzuela’s legacy, providing fans with more opportunities to celebrate a player whose impact transcends the field.
