UPDATE: A San Jose tattoo artist and immigrant rights advocate, Guillermo Medina Reyes, risks imminent detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as a crucial court hearing approaches. A temporary restraining order preventing his arrest expires this week, heightening the urgency of his situation.

During a hearing on July 15, 2025, at a federal courthouse in San Francisco, Reyes’ attorney voiced concerns over the potential lifting of this order. If the judge rules against Reyes on Thursday, he could face arrest by ICE agents, sparking outrage among supporters and activists.

Outside the courthouse, dozens rallied in support of Reyes, chanting, “Donald Trump, let’s be clear, immigrants are welcome here!” Activists with Indivisible San Francisco stated, “This is a very critical moment. Guillermo knows that detention is a terrifying reality, but he’s choosing to fight back to defend his freedom.”

Reyes, 31, immigrated from Mexico at the age of six. Despite a troubled past, including a juvenile conviction for attempted murder, he has turned his life around and now dedicates himself to advocating against what he calls “dehumanizing” immigration policies. His leadership has inspired many, as he emphasizes the need for compassion in the treatment of immigrants.

Reyes’ journey is marked by resilience. After serving over a decade in prison, he was detained in an ICE facility for more than a year. He has since emerged as a vocal opponent of ICE’s policies, aiming to protect others from the same fate he faced.

The situation is evolving rapidly. Activists warn that if Reyes is detained, it could set a dangerous precedent for immigrant rights in the community. “ICE is going after everyone that they can,” friend Stephanie Jayne told reporters, reflecting the fears of many regarding the current state of immigration enforcement.

With the hearing ahead, all eyes are on San Francisco’s federal court. The outcome could have significant implications not just for Reyes but for countless others in similar situations. As the community rallies in support, the stakes could not be higher.
