According to the latest estimates from the International Energy Agency, over 2.4 billion air conditioning units are currently in operation worldwide, with this figure expected to nearly double to 5.6 billion by 2050. The largest contributors to this surge in demand are expected to be China and India.
The anticipated growth in air conditioning units is not limited to these two countries. Markets such as Indonesia and Mexico are also projected to experience substantial increases. Specifically, the number of air conditioners in Indonesia is forecasted to grow eleven-fold, while Mexico is expected to see a six-fold increase between 2020 and 2050. Despite these increases, the overall number of units in these nations will still be relatively small compared to the expected additions in China and India.

Air conditioning and fans already account for approximately 10 percent of global electricity consumption. In comparison, electric vehicles are predicted to contribute 13 percent to the increase in global electricity needs, while heating will account for around 7 percent. Unless advancements in air conditioning technology lead to significantly greater efficiency, the rising energy demands associated with cooling systems could pose a major environmental challenge before the middle of the century.
