A recent survey indicates that the average dog owner makes significant lifestyle adjustments based on their pet’s needs. Conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Darwin’s Pet Food, the study involved 2,000 dog owners and revealed that pet decisions impact daily routines, social engagements, and even working arrangements.
On average, dog owners make approximately 27 decisions each month influenced by their dogs. These choices include cancelling social plans an average of 4.4 times and shortening outings about 5.8 times per month due to their pet’s presence or needs. Additionally, around 3.3 times each month, owners alter their work schedules or locations to accommodate their dogs.
Insights from DINKWADs
The survey particularly highlighted the behaviors of a demographic known as DINKWADs (double income, no kids with a dog). Among these respondents, 71% stated that their lives revolve around their pets, compared to 61% of other dog owners. Furthermore, 63% of DINKWAD respondents consider their dogs as “children,” while 54% of the general dog owner population shares this sentiment.
Notably, 57% of DINKWADs admitted to staying home when their dogs appeared lonely or sad. In addition, 52% felt guilty about not spending enough quality time with their pets. A significant 58% of DINKWADs even opted to skip social functions simply because their dog looked “too cute and comfy.”
Financial Commitment to Canine Care
Gary Tashjian, founder and CEO of Darwin’s Pet Food, remarked, “Our dogs are more than just pets; they shape every aspect of our lives.” The survey findings confirm that dog owners, particularly DINKWADs, are deeply committed to their pets’ well-being. The data shows that DINKWADs spend an average of $172.60 more annually than their counterparts, with expenditures averaging $194.60 for veterinary bills, $183.80 for food and essentials, and $128.60 on treats and toys.
DINKWAD respondents also demonstrate a tendency to invest time in researching pet food, with 80% focusing on ingredient lists and 66% considering a brand’s reputation. They are more likely to purchase high-quality food and treats, with 80% confirming they choose premium options. Furthermore, 47% reported having multiple dog beds in their homes, while 41% opted for personalized accessories like engraved tags.
When it comes to splurging, DINKWADs show a clear preference for their pets. 41% indicated they would rather spoil their dogs than themselves, with 14% choosing to indulge in personal treats. This trend extends to special occasions, as DINKWADs are more likely to celebrate their dogs’ birthdays by preparing their favorite meals (at 44%) or taking them on outings such as beach trips or hikes (at 31%).
The survey results underscore the deep bond between pet owners and their dogs, illustrating that many view their pets as integral family members deserving of celebration and care.
