david-corenswet-reflects-on-his-journey-to-becoming-superman

David Corenswet shared that he was referred to as Superman long before he officially took on the iconic role in James Gunn’s latest film. In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Corenswet recounted amusing anecdotes from friends who recognized his resemblance to the superhero.

During the interview, Corenswet recalled a memorable incident from his school days. He dashed out of his room in his underwear to silence a smoke alarm, which prompted friends to liken him to Superman. Although he was not wearing a cape, the comparison was clearly evident to those around him. He humorously suggested that his roommate may have “projected” the cape in her imagination.

In addition to these personal stories, Corenswet noted that his character in the TV series The Politician also received similar comments, reinforcing the notion that he embodied the superhero persona. When asked about his thoughts on portraying Superman, Corenswet expressed a sense of disbelief. “Who could ever say they hope to play Superman one day? What a crazy thing to say,” he remarked.

The opportunity to audition for the role came years later, transforming his childhood dream into a tangible possibility. Corenswet revealed that he filmed his audition tape alongside his wife, adding a personal touch to the process. About six weeks after submitting the tape, he was invited for a screen test, marking a significant milestone in his career.

In the same interview, James Gunn explained that Corenswet’s physical appearance and acting talent were critical factors in his selection for the role. Gunn praised Corenswet for possessing both the “acting chops” and athleticism necessary to bring Superman to life.

Now playing in theaters, early reviews of the film have highlighted Corenswet’s portrayal of the beloved superhero. David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter described him as an “outstanding Superman/Clark Kent,” noting that his performance is infused with “self-irony, charm, and poignant vulnerability.”

As audiences flock to see the film, Corenswet’s journey from being playfully dubbed Superman to embodying the character on screen resonates as an inspiring story of aspiration and achievement.
