Michigan State sophomore point guard Divine Ugochukwu has begun to establish himself within the Spartans’ basketball program as he progresses through the offseason. Ugochukwu, who transferred from the University of Miami, is expected to fill the role of backup point guard for the upcoming season. He spoke to reporters during the second week of the 2025 Moneyball Pro-Am at Eastern High School in Lansing, Michigan.
Insights on the Transfer Journey
Reflecting on his decision to join Michigan State, Ugochukwu expressed enthusiasm about the program’s rich history of successful point guards. “Just the point guard history here and just the winning culture and competitiveness, I loved it,” he stated, highlighting the aspects that attracted him to the Spartans.
Ugochukwu’s transfer was prompted by the retirement of his coach at Miami. “I hit the portal because our coach from Miami retired. I was getting contacted by other schools early in the process,” he explained. After a few weeks, Michigan State reached out, and a connection quickly developed.
During his visit to Michigan State, Ugochukwu was accompanied by his family for a two-day tour of East Lansing. He described the experience as enjoyable, noting they engaged in workouts and explored the basketball facilities.
Building Connections with Teammates
Ugochukwu has already started to bond with his new teammates, particularly with fellow point guard Jeremy Fears. “He’s a really cool guy, a real fun guy, high-energy,” Ugochukwu said. Their competitive spirit during practices has contributed to a positive team dynamic.
During his earlier media appearance at the Moneyball Pro-Am, Ugochukwu shared how he has adjusted to being part of the Spartans. He credits senior players such as Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper for providing guidance and support throughout the transition.
As the offseason progresses, Ugochukwu’s focus remains on improving his skills and integrating into the Michigan State basketball culture. Fans can follow his journey and stay updated on Spartans basketball through the official Spartan Nation page on social media.
The upcoming season holds promise for Ugochukwu and the Michigan State Spartans as they aim to build on their competitive legacy.
