Remembering Sally Ann Sprout Mallard: A Life of Love and Legacy
Sally Ann Sprout Mallard, a beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was 89 years old. Sally’s legacy is marked by her devotion to her family, her vibrant personality, and her commitment to her community.
Born on September 8, 1936, to Melba Pauline Savage Sprout and Ralph Edgar Sprout, Sally grew up in Torrance, California. She attended Torrance High School, where she met her future husband, Clayton Mallard, in the 10th grade. Their bond blossomed into a lifelong partnership, culminating in their marriage on August 5, 1956. Over the course of their 69 years together, they nurtured a loving family, creating countless memories and friendships along the way.
Sally’s talents were diverse and remarkable. She excelled in sewing, cooking, baking, and home decorating, always striving to make everyone feel welcome and cherished. Her commitment to family life was evident in her ability to host gatherings that brought joy to her loved ones.
The couple’s journey took them across the United States, with Clayton’s career leading them to cities such as Atlanta, Georgia, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before returning to Tustin, California. In 2002, they settled in Fallbrook, California, where they continued to forge new friendships while maintaining connections with old ones. Sally and Clayton’s home in Fallbrook became a gathering place for the Torrance High School class of 1955 during their 60th reunion.
Sally was actively involved in her church and exemplified kindness and thoughtfulness in her daily interactions. She was also a passionate bridge player, teaching the game in Iowa and maintaining an active bridge group in Tustin. Even in her later years, she continued to play at the Fallbrook Senior Center, demonstrating her enduring love for the game.
In addition to her many hobbies, Sally was an avid tennis player, beginning in her thirties. After retiring, she joined the Fallbrook Tennis Club, forging a close friendship with the owner, Dorothy Roth.
Sally’s life was rich with cherished moments, particularly the births of her four daughters and the weddings that followed. She celebrated the arrival of each grandchild and great-grandchild with enthusiasm, often organizing memorable holiday dinners, baby showers, and family gatherings. A particularly touching highlight was her 50th wedding anniversary, where she brought together loved ones to honor her enduring love for Clayton. The celebration was made even more special by a visit from Leonora Costales-Cabesa, an Ecuadorian AFS student who had lived with the family from 1976 to 1977.
Sally is survived by her husband, Clayton Mallard; daughters Rebecca Mallard (Debbie), Gwendolyn Wilson, Jennifer Artunian (Mike), and Cynthia Swift (Larry); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her three sisters, Peggy Olivier, Jeannie Beard, and Linda Redderson, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Her warmth and vibrancy will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A memorial service for family and friends will be held on January 3, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Christ the King Church in Fallbrook. Sally’s life serves as a testament to the power of love, family, and community, and her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to share in her life.
