Community Mourns the Passing of John Paul Kirk at 94
John P. Kirk, Sr., a cherished husband, father, and community leader, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on December 9, 2025. Surrounded by his loving family, including his wife of 73 years, Alice Kirk, and their three children, John leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication.
A Life Rich in Service and Accomplishments
Born on March 14, 1931, in Ashland, Alabama, John was the youngest of ten siblings. His upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of family, which he maintained throughout his life. After graduating from Clay County High School in 1949, he unexpectedly enlisted in the Army Air Corps, which later became the United States Air Force.
During his service, John was stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base, where he taught aircraft electronics. It was there that he met Alice, marrying her on December 27, 1952. Together, they welcomed three children: John, Jr., Kathy, and Rebecca, and were blessed with ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another grandchild expected in January 2026.
Following his military service, John and Alice moved to Atlanta, where he pursued further education, ultimately earning a BS in Professional Aeronautics from Embry Riddle University at the age of 76. His passion for flying began in Texas, where he obtained his pilot’s license, enjoying the skies for over 50 years.
A Legacy of Community Engagement
John’s professional journey included a successful career in financial planning, starting his own investments and planning company after working for an oil company. His dedication to community service was evident in his roles with various organizations. He served as president of the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club, held board positions with The Arc South Bay, and was actively involved with the Torrance YMCA and the Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce.
In 1961, John and Alice joined the First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach, where John became known for his leadership in establishing the church’s endowment fund. His contributions extended beyond the church, reflecting his commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
John is survived by his wife, Alice; their children, John Kirk (Mindy), Kathy McCandless (Richard), and Rebecca Kirk; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family, along with many friends and community members, will gather to celebrate his life.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church, located at 243 S. Broadway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring the remarkable life of John Paul Kirk.
