UPDATE: The Creston community is making headlines in 2025 with significant projects and events that are reshaping local life. Just announced, the Gibson Memorial Library received a generous $10,000 grant from the American Library Association to enhance accessibility for patrons, providing vital services to homebound residents.

The library’s new program, spearheaded by Assistant Director Jordan Foote, will deliver books monthly to Union County residents with disabilities. This initiative responds to the growing need for accessible services, making it easier for those unable to leave their homes to engage with literature.

In a parallel effort, Creston’s city officials and Greater Regional Health have committed $60,000 annually for the next three years to keep the Southern Prairie Family Fitness Center operational. This funding aims to support community health and wellness, ensuring residents have access to fitness facilities.

In another exciting development, Union County has officially joined Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, now mailing one free book each month to children aged birth to five. Families are encouraged to register their children for this enriching program, available both at the library and online.

Creston’s local author Terri Stephens-Higgins made waves with her children’s book, “Bella Bean on Blueberry Lane: The Puppy Wonder,” released in late summer. The book aims to simplify conversations around cancer for young readers and received widespread support, culminating in a donation of copies to every second grader in the area by local physician Dr. Karen Krogstad.

Local businesses united for the inaugural Spring Shop Hop, drawing crowds eager to embrace the warmer weather. Participants created vibrant bouquets from 14 participating shops, showcasing community spirit and local commerce.

The annual Market on Maple event returned on May 10, with over 50 vendors and food trucks, alongside entertainment from Creston students and local performers. This beloved event continues to foster community engagement and support local talent.

Creston celebrated a bustling Fourth of July weekend filled with festivities, including the 77th annual 10,000 Crestonians event. The weekend kicked off with a 5K Run/Walk and featured a parade, talent show, and fireworks on the Fourth. The event culminated with the 19th Annual Party in the Park, featuring live music from the Carl Worden Band and Elton Dan and the Rocket Band.

As December approached, Creston revived cherished traditions like the Merry Marketplace and the Annual Lighted Christmas Parade. Local shops adapted after a snowed-out Small Business Saturday, proving resilience amid winter challenges.

In terms of recognition, Creston celebrated its new Hall of Fame inductees during October’s homecoming activities. Notable alumni Beth Litwak and Casey Bryant were honored for their contributions in theater and sports, respectively.

The Creston Chamber of Commerce also recognized community leaders during November’s awards ceremony. Jamie Travis was named Citizen of the Year for his impactful service in Kiwanis and the Union County Fair. Trevor Paulus received the Volunteer of the Year award for selflessly helping local projects, while high school junior Dylan Dornack was honored as Youth of the Year for his leadership in the Boy Scouts and Future Business Leaders of America.

These developments highlight how the Creston community is not only thriving but also deeply engaged in building a supportive and vibrant environment. Residents and families are invited to participate in these ongoing initiatives and events that continue to shape Creston’s future. Stay tuned for more updates as the community progresses through the year!
