Netflix Greenlights Season 2 of Hit Japanese Reality Series
Netflix has officially renewed its popular Japanese reality dating series, Badly in Love, for a second season. This decision follows a surge in global interest after the first season concluded, marking a significant success for the streaming platform. The show debuted earlier this month and quickly topped Netflix’s charts in Japan, maintaining its position for two consecutive weeks.
The series, which gained traction not just in Japan but also in countries such as Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and Hong Kong, even secured the No. 8 spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list for non-English-language TV shows.
Exploring the Unique Premise
Created by Megumi, Badly in Love features 11 participants—men and women with backgrounds linked to gang culture and personal struggles. Set in a secluded academy, contestants engage in a social experiment where they confront their pasts while navigating romantic relationships. The show distinguishes itself from traditional dating formats by emphasizing raw emotions and vulnerability, rather than polished tropes.
The first season took place in an urban environment, but Season 2 will transition to a seaside setting. This change aims to foster new dynamics as a fresh group of participants embarks on their journey of connection and self-discovery.
Host and Cultural Impact
The series is hosted by Megumi, alongside rapper AK-69 and comedian Nagano. In response to the announcement of Season 2, Megumi expressed her excitement, stating, “I’m truly delighted that Season 2 has been greenlit so quickly. Since the series’ release, it has been incredibly meaningful for all of us to see the yankii culture—something we consider to be ‘ultra-Japan’—reach not only audiences in Japan, but viewers around the world. We will continue to pour our hearts into Season 2 so that audiences can experience even more of the raw charm of yankii who live every moment to the fullest.”
Currently, Season 1 of Badly in Love is available for streaming on Netflix, while the anticipated second season is officially confirmed. This renewal not only reflects the show’s popularity but also highlights the increasing global interest in diverse storytelling formats.
