UPDATE: A tragic traffic collision in Hilo on December 24, 2025, has resulted in one fatality, prompting an urgent investigation by local authorities. The incident occurred near the 13-mile marker on Daniel K. Inouye Highway, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety during the holiday season.

According to police reports, a 2020 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a 2025 Mazda two-door convertible traveling in the opposite direction. The driver of the Mazda was swiftly transported to the hospital but was pronounced dead around 8 p.m. that evening. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of family.

The driver of the Toyota Tacoma sustained minor injuries and has been arrested for first-degree negligent homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, and reckless driving. Authorities suspect that speed, alcohol, and/or drugs played significant roles in this devastating crash.

This latest incident marks the 21st traffic fatality in Hawaii for 2025, a stark contrast to the 28 fatalities reported at the same time last year. The increase in road deaths raises urgent questions about enforcement and public awareness regarding safe driving practices.

Police are actively seeking information regarding the collision. Anyone with details is urged to contact Officer Johnathan Rapoza at (808) 961-2339 or via email at [email protected]. Those wishing to remain anonymous may reach out to Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers on our roads, particularly during busy holiday periods. As authorities continue their investigation, community members are urged to drive responsibly and remain vigilant for the safety of all.
