The European Commission has officially renewed its data adequacy agreement with the United Kingdom, allowing for the uninterrupted flow of personal data between the European Economic Area (EEA) and the UK for an additional six years. This extension, which will last until 2031, comes as a crucial development for businesses that rely on seamless data transfers following the UK’s exit from the European Union in 2020.
The adequacy decisions were first established after Brexit, with the Commission determining that the UK’s data protection framework offered safeguards comparable to those found within the EU. The prior agreement was set to expire in June 2025 but received a temporary extension to allow for a thorough review of the implications of the recently enacted Data (Use and Access) Act.
