Cassi Zheng Quits Job at 29, Embraces Travel and New Ventures
Cassi Zheng, a former brand director from Shanghai, made a pivotal decision at the age of 29 when she resigned from her role to embark on a transformative journey. In February 2023, feeling overwhelmed and exhausted from the demands of her job, she chose to prioritize her mental well-being and explore different paths in life.
Zheng’s career at a sports-drink startup involved constant interaction with over 30 individuals daily, leading to chronic stress and health issues. After her departure, she initially experienced a sense of panic due to the sudden lack of structure in her life. She described feeling lost for several days, grappling with the unfamiliarity of having no immediate responsibilities.
Traveling across Asia became her first step toward recovery. Zheng commenced her journey with friends, visiting places like Japan and Italy. Her experience in Japan was especially significant; it allowed her to reconnect with her interests and embrace moments of solitude. In Tokyo, she celebrated her birthday alone, reflecting on her life amidst the serene gardens of the Nezu Museum.
By taking a solo trip to Kyoto on New Year’s Day, Zheng tapped into a deeper understanding of herself. She found comfort in the quiet and beauty of Japan, a stark contrast to her previous life in the bustling city of Shanghai.
Embracing Change and Finding Purpose
Over the next year, Zheng’s travels took her through various countries in Asia, including South Korea and Thailand, where she engaged in activities that challenged her physically and mentally. She biked long distances, participated in kayaking, and visited local markets, which rejuvenated her spirit.
In late 2023, she spent three weeks in Europe, hiking in Sicily where she met locals and connected with the vibrant culture there. These experiences broadened her perspective and provided emotional freedom, allowing her to explore her identity beyond her previous career.
During her travels, Zheng also participated in a five-day water-immersion course in Bali. This intensive experience encouraged her to express her emotions freely. She recalled moments of vulnerability that were both overwhelming and liberating, as she began to detach from seeking external validation.
On her 30th birthday, she finally revealed her gap year plans to her parents and shared her new venture, Aurawell, an aromatherapy brand she had started with a friend. Initially shocked, her parents became supportive after reviewing her business plan and prototypes.
Launching Aurawell and Looking Ahead
In May 2024, just over a year after her departure from her corporate role, Zheng officially launched Aurawell. She introduced the brand to the public by leading a meditation session in an underground performance space, merging her interest in wellness with her entrepreneurial aspirations.
Reflecting on her journey, Zheng considers her decision to take a gap year one of the wisest choices she has made. It allowed her to slow down, reflect on her values, and discover what truly brings her joy without the pressure of societal expectations. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of stepping away from the conventional path to explore new possibilities.
Zheng’s experiences resonate with many who seek to redefine their lives and careers. She encourages others considering a similar path to embrace the unknown and pursue their passions boldly.
