Ian Roome MP Shares Christmas Message of Support for North Devon
As Christmas approaches, Ian Roome MP has shared a heartfelt message to the residents of North Devon, highlighting the importance of community support during the festive season. He expressed gratitude for the kindness shown by local communities throughout the year while also acknowledging the challenges many face, especially during this time.
Roome emphasized the significance of those working through the holidays in essential services. He stated, “I want to say thank you to the people who will be working through the festive period; in our NHS, care services, emergency services, and local businesses.” He noted that the festive season can be particularly difficult due to ongoing economic pressures, reminding residents that the cost of living crisis does not pause for Christmas.
In his message, Roome reached out to those who may be feeling isolated or overwhelmed. “If you’re in a position to help, even in a small way, there is so much we can do that really makes a difference,” he said. He highlighted the importance of community support networks, particularly during the winter months when demand for assistance tends to rise.
Community Initiatives and Support Services
Roome recently visited Barnstaple Tesco to support their Winter Food Collection initiative, which operates in partnership with Trussell. He acknowledged the efforts of both staff and volunteers, urging residents to contribute by adding extra items to their shopping baskets for the food collection. “Food banks and local support services see demand rise in winter, and these collections help keep shelves stocked with the essentials people need,” he remarked.
He also participated in the festive Memory Café at Barnstaple Library, where older residents and individuals living with memory loss or dementia gathered for companionship, refreshments, and conversation. Roome described the event as a lovely opportunity to foster community spirit and connection.
Moreover, he recognized organizations such as Northern Devon Foodbank, North Devon Hospice, and North Devon Against Domestic Abuse for their continuous efforts in supporting vulnerable populations. He encouraged individuals to seek help, stating, “Support comes in lots of forms, and there’s absolutely no shame in reaching out.”
Citizens Advice is also available for those facing issues related to money, debt, benefits, or housing. Roome’s message emphasized that help is accessible and urged those in need to take the first step towards seeking assistance.
