UPDATE: A Los Angeles man has been sentenced to a potential life term for his role in two brutal murders, including one victim set ablaze in Pasadena. Jeovani Pluma, 24, was handed a sentence of 25 years to life in state prison on December 19, 2023, following his no-contest plea to first-degree murder for the death of Ulises Nieto-Cabrera, 30.

Pluma’s chilling actions also include a hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of Leonidas Accip Serech, 39, in Koreatown on April 26, 2022. He received an additional sentence of two years and eight months for this crime. The tragic events have left communities in shock and mourning, as details emerge of the devastating impact on the victims’ families.

On New Year’s Day 2021, Nieto-Cabrera, identified as an El Salvador native, was discovered in the 700 block of Rockwood Road in Pasadena, suffering from severe thermal injuries. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to a hospital. The motive behind this horrific act remains unknown, raising questions and concerns among the local community.

Pluma also pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter regarding Serech’s death, which was initially charged as murder. His sentence for this charge will run concurrently with his life term for Nieto-Cabrera’s murder. The incident involving Serech occurred while he and his brother were biking to their bakery jobs, highlighting the tragic loss of life during a routine activity.

Pluma has been in custody since his arrest in 2022, with authorities confirming that he will remain behind bars as he serves his sentence. The case has drawn significant attention, emphasizing the urgent need for public safety measures in the wake of such violent acts.

As communities grapple with the ramifications of these murders, officials urge residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has not commented on whether they will pursue any further charges against Pluma.
