BREAKING: Newark Parish Church has officially reopened its doors for public worship after a staggering 13-month closure. On December 21, 2025, the church celebrated its first services since closing in November 2024 for extensive restoration as part of the ambitious ‘Reawakening of St Mary Magdalene’ project.

The historic church, which boasts a remarkable 900-year history, welcomed hundreds of worshippers throughout the day, marking a significant milestone for the community. The day began with a traditional Choral Eucharist at 9 AM, followed by a lively Contemporary Christmas Celebration for families at 11 AM. In the evening, the pews were filled for the atmospheric Festival of Nine Lessons and carol singing.

Rev. Danny Marshall, who led the services, expressed his joy:

“It was an absolute joy and delight to gather in St Mary Magdalene again. After almost 13 months, it was wonderful to see so many people.”

He emphasized gratitude for the funding and the tireless efforts of volunteers that made the reopening possible.

The church is now poised to continue its festive offerings, with special Christmas Eve services, including the traditional Christingle and Midnight Mass, followed by communion and a Christmas Day celebration. This reopening is not just about the building; it signifies a renewed sense of community and hope.

Church warden and Reawakening Project lead, Andrew Fearn, stated,

“It was a tremendous day, full of joy. It was really gratifying to see so many people come out, for all different reasons, whether it was Christmas, curiosity, or something else.”

He highlighted that the project extends beyond restoration, emphasizing,

“This isn’t the end, this is the start.”

Looking ahead, Newark Parish Church is scheduled to fully reopen to the public in mid-January, with new information boards to be installed later in the month, along with guided tours and regular events. The community is eager to embrace this new chapter in the church’s rich history.

This momentous occasion not only celebrates the church’s physical restoration but also sparks hope and connection among the townspeople. As the bells ring out once again, Newark Parish Church stands ready to serve as a beacon of faith and community in the heart of Newark.
