Two Riders Stranded 100 Feet Up After Texas Coaster Malfunction
URGENT UPDATE: Two theme park riders were left dangling more than 100 feet in the air for over 30 minutes after a malfunction on the Circuit Breaker roller coaster at the Circuit of the Americas near Austin, Texas on October 4, 2023. The harrowing incident occurred around 10 p.m. when the ride unexpectedly halted at a steep angle during the first drop.
Witnesses reported that Matthew Cantu, 24, and Nicholas Sanchez, 20, were left in a precarious position, causing panic among their families and onlookers. Family members stated they received no clear updates from park staff, who provided conflicting information about the riders’ safety, including alarming claims that the riders “weren’t strapped in currently,” according to a publicist representing the two men.
In response to the incident, the Circuit of the Americas confirmed that a sensor had triggered a ride delay. “It was resolved, and the ride proceeded without incident,” the park stated. They emphasized, “As with all amusement attractions of this sort, delays occasionally occur. We regret the inconvenience and are glad that out of the 25,000 people that have ridden the coaster, only two have this badge of courage.”
Emergency responders from Austin-Travis County EMS evaluated one of the riders on-site, who declined medical attention. The Circuit Breaker, Texas’ first “tilt” roller coaster, features a 90-degree drop, adding to the thrill—and now the concern—surrounding its safety.
The ride opened as a preview in October and is set for its official debut next year. Nearby, another tilt coaster, the Siren’s Curse at Cedar Point in Ohio, has faced similar malfunctions since its launch this summer, raising questions about safety standards in amusement parks.
This developing story highlights the urgent need for clear communication and safety protocols at amusement parks. As investigations continue into this alarming incident, many parkgoers are left wondering about their safety and the reliability of thrill rides.
Stay tuned for further updates on this incident as we learn more about the safety measures being implemented.
