Stay Active This Winter: Tips from Experts to Keep Fit!

UPDATE: As winter approaches, experts emphasize the importance of staying active despite the cold weather. New guidelines released by Family and Consumer Sciences specialist Sharolyn Jackson recommend that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week. This translates to approximately 30 minutes of exercise five days a week, which can easily include a brisk 10- to 15-minute walk outdoors.

Jackson advises dressing appropriately in layers, including hats, gloves, and suitable footwear, to ensure comfort while exercising in winter conditions. She highlights that children thrive in snowy environments, urging adults to join them for fun and engaging outdoor activities. Simple tasks like raking leaves or shoveling snow also provide excellent exercise options, though caution is advised to avoid overexertion.

For those seeking indoor alternatives, Jackson suggests focusing on three key areas: strength, flexibility, and balance. “Strengthening and stretching exercises can be simple and effective,” she notes. Activities can range from using specialized equipment to bodyweight exercises, such as arm curls with cans of vegetables while watching television. For those with limited space, incorporating small hops around the home can significantly enhance bone strength.

Jackson provides practical balance exercises, recommending that individuals practice standing on one foot while brushing their teeth or washing dishes. This simple action can greatly improve strength and stability. She also encourages performing wide-leg squats while engaging with family or during TV time to keep active.

As part of the commitment to health and fitness, residents can look forward to programs like Stay Strong Stay Healthy and Walk With Ease, set to launch across the Cottonwood Extension District in early 2026. These initiatives aim to foster community engagement and promote healthy lifestyles during the winter months.
