Montcalm Community College Enrollment Surges by 16.2% This Fall
BREAKING: Montcalm Community College (MCC) in Sidney Township has announced a remarkable 16.2% increase in enrollment this fall, reaching 2,035 students compared to 1,751 last year. This surge marks the highest growth among Michigan community colleges, indicating a significant rebound from the pandemic’s impact that left enrollment at its lowest in decades.
During a recent MCC Board meeting, President Bradley Barrick expressed his astonishment at the college’s recovery, stating, “It’s mind-blowing. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re going to lead the state again in enrollment in the spring.” With 1,654 students already registered for the upcoming spring semester, a 16.54% increase compared to last year, MCC is on track for continued growth.
The college’s enrollment has spiked dramatically since the fall of 2020, which recorded only 1,414 students. Barrick noted that the institution’s dual enrollment program is a major contributor, with 704 dual-enrolled students already surpassing last year’s total of 664 for the spring semester.
MCC’s total contact hours, a key metric for state funding, have also risen by 18.83% compared to this time last year. This growth reflects a strong demand for educational opportunities as students seek to advance their academic and career prospects.
Looking ahead, Barrick emphasized the college’s commitment to expanding its reach, particularly into neighboring Ionia County. The highest number of dual-enrolled students comes from Belding High School, with 88 students participating this semester. Other schools in the region, including Tri County and Greenville, are also contributing to this upward trend.
MCC Board Vice Chair Carol Deuling-Ravell raised concerns about transportation for Ionia County students, many of whom face significant travel distances to MCC’s Sidney campus. “It’s a hike,” she stated, highlighting the need for reliable access for students who may not have dependable transportation.
Barrick acknowledged the challenges and mentioned that discussions are underway to explore potential partnerships for a physical presence in Ionia, including options at the Ionia County Career Center. “We are on the front end of those conversations,” he said, indicating a proactive approach to meeting student needs.
As MCC approaches its all-time enrollment high of 2,328 students from fall 2009, the college remains optimistic about future growth. Barrick is confident that the numbers will continue to rise as the spring semester approaches.
With such significant developments, MCC’s enrollment surge not only reflects a recovery from the pandemic but also a growing commitment to education in the region. This trend is likely to impact the local economy and community as more students gain access to higher education.
