Goa Nightclub Fire Claims 25 Lives as Families Face Heartbreak

Among those who perished were brothers Binod and Pradip Mahto, who had migrated from Ranchi in Jharkhand earlier this year to seek better job opportunities. They had been working as cooks at the club and were looking forward to their weddings scheduled for early next year. Their elder brother, Fagu Mahto, revealed that the family was in the process of rebuilding their home when they received the heartbreaking news.

“I last spoke to Binod and Pradip on a video call on Saturday evening. They were eager to finish the house before Holi so that it would be ready for the weddings,” he recounted, as the family grappled with the arrival of their coffins rather than the joyous occasion they had anticipated.

In Khunti district, Phulo Mundain, aged 52, was eagerly awaiting her son Mohit, 22, who had been working as a waiter at the nightclub. “Our financial situation was improving because of his earnings. Mohit used to say that he would build a house in a year,” she shared, reflecting on her son’s aspirations that have now been shattered.

Communities in Mourning

The tragedy has reverberated through various communities, with the village of Uttarakhand mourning the loss of Satish Rana, 27, who had moved to Goa for work just two months prior to the incident. His father, Surendra Rana, expressed disbelief as the family tried to come to terms with the sudden loss of their son.

In Karnataka, the arrival of Ishaq Hussain‘s body at the airport left his family in shock. The 25-year-old data scientist had traveled to Goa with friends for a holiday. A family member revealed that Ishaq died during the chaos that ensued after the fire broke out. Alongside Ishaq, four tourists from Delhi lost their lives, including a man and three of his sisters-in-law. A family friend, Harish Singh, described their excitement for the trip, which was their first visit to Goa.

The only survivor from that group was the man’s wife, Bhavna, who had been dining with them and was nearly at the exit when the fire erupted. As investigations continue, families affected by this tragedy are left to navigate their grief and seek answers amidst the heartbreak.
