CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — The former Coventry School site will be transformed into a public greenspace, inviting community input on its design and features. This initiative aims to create an outdoor hub that captures the vibrant spirit of the Coventry neighborhood while promoting community well-being. Heights Libraries, in collaboration with county and city officials, is gathering ideas from residents to ensure the space reflects local priorities.

The envisioned greenspace, part of the broader PEACE Park project, will offer amenities such as shaded gathering areas, native meadows, and flexible programming spaces. Residents can share their suggestions through a survey available on the Heights Libraries website, which will remain open until January 4, 2024.

New Tools for Residents and Community Initiatives

In addition to the greenspace project, the Cuyahoga County Treasurer’s Office has launched a new tool aimed at helping residents locate and claim unclaimed funds. The Unclaimed Funds page serves as a comprehensive resource for residents to search for and submit claims on available funds. Treasurer Brad Cromes emphasized the commitment to helping residents recover money owed to them, stating, “This tool makes the process straightforward and accessible, putting more money back into people’s pockets.”

While residents can easily search online for unclaimed funds, they are advised to be cautious of scams. Common tactics include requests for payment in advance or demands for sensitive personal information. The Cuyahoga County government does not allow paid finders to collect funds on behalf of others. For inquiries regarding scams or finder letters, residents can contact the Department of Consumer Affairs at 216-443-7035 or email [email protected].

Cleveland Heights City Council has also taken steps towards addressing housing needs with a community meeting scheduled for December 18, 2023. Developers and builders will discuss infill housing initiatives following the council’s approval to sell 45 vacant lots in the Cain Park and Cedar-Lee neighborhoods. FutureHeights and Rebuild Cleveland will lead the project, with community input welcomed during the event at the Lee Road Library branch from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Support Services for Seniors and Caregivers

Seniors in Ohio can access various assistance programs, including the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), which helps households with heating costs. The program is available to individuals at or below 175 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Seniors may seek assistance in completing applications through their local Area Agency on Aging or apply online at energyhelp.ohio.gov.

Cleveland Heights residents can also benefit from sewer bill assistance programs. Eligible individuals aged 65 or older or those with permanent disabilities may qualify for the Homestead Program, which offers reduced rates. The Affordability Program provides a 40 percent discount on sewer charges for low-income, owner-occupying residents. For more details, visit clevelandheights.gov/877/Sewer-Affordability.

In a related effort, Benjamin Rose is conducting a research study to understand the challenges faced by caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. The study targets caregivers aged 60 and older and involves virtual focus groups to discuss their needs and preferences. Participants will receive a $50 gift card for their involvement. Interested caregivers can call 216-373-1738 or email [email protected] for more information.

On a lighter note, the University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center will host a Holiday Drive-Thru event on December 17, 2023. The event promises family fun with Santa Claus, holiday music, and treats, taking place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Warrensville Heights Fire Station 2.

The Beachwood City Schools will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Bryden Elementary School on December 17, 2023, at 1 p.m. The school will welcome its first students after winter break on January 8, 2024.

In the realm of education, the Institute for Learning in Retirement-East has opened registration for its winter term, offering various continuing education classes for seniors. Starting January 13, 2024, the program includes college-level courses in subjects like art appreciation and current events. Registration is available until January 8, 2024.

Finally, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland has appointed Kari Blumenthal as its new Chief Financial Officer. With over two decades of financial leadership experience, her role includes overseeing the Federation’s financial operations and investment strategy. Blumenthal’s experience includes prior positions at organizations such as Eaton Corporation and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

These initiatives highlight the ongoing efforts to enhance community engagement and support across Cleveland Heights, with a focus on inclusivity and improvement for all residents.
