Pennsylvania Institute of Technology Launches $7.3 Million Renovation
The Pennsylvania Institute of Technology (PIT) in Upper Providence Township has officially commenced a significant renovation project, breaking ground on a transformative $7.3 million initiative. The project aims to enhance the college’s facilities, creating modern classrooms and laboratories to better serve the educational needs of its growing student population.
As part of a comprehensive upgrade, the college will add a new entryway and multi-purpose hub, alongside a detailed renovation of administrative offices. This extensive project will cover approximately 15,000 square feet and is expected to be completed over the next two years.
Matt Meyers, the president and CEO of PIT, emphasized the long-term vision behind the project. “These new spaces will allow us to prepare more skilled nurses for our community and create a welcoming entryway,” he stated, noting that planning for this initiative commenced six years ago. With current enrollment numbers climbing from 325 to nearly 1,000 students over the past few years, the improvements are seen as essential to support both current and future students.
Addressing Health Care Needs in Delaware County
State Senator Tim Kearney (D-26) lauded the college’s role in addressing the pressing health care crisis in Delaware County. He described PIT as an “academic jewel” that plays a crucial role at the intersection of education and workforce development. Kearney highlighted the urgency of the nursing shortage, exacerbated by the recent closure of four hospitals in the area, which has left many community health needs unmet.
“The nursing shortage is beyond recognition,” Kearney remarked. He noted that stakeholders at both state and county levels are actively working on solutions to this escalating issue, which has become increasingly critical. Kearney referenced the upcoming establishment of new micro-hospitals and the potential reopening of emergency services at Taylor Hospital, indicating ongoing efforts to bolster local health care infrastructure.
Ashley Taylor, a recent PIT graduate, expressed enthusiasm for the renovation plans, saying, “I wish they had done it sooner. I want to be a part of it.” Taylor has already found work in skilled care at Care Options for Kids, reflecting the practical impact of her education.
A Legacy of Support and Innovation
The renovation project has received substantial financial backing, including a notable contribution of $3.9 million from the Walter Garrison Foundation. This foundation was established by Walter R. Garrison, the founder of PIT in its current form. His daughter, Susan Garrison, who serves as a trustee, spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasizing her father’s vision for accessible and transformative education.
“Our family is grateful to see my father’s legacy carried forward,” she stated, reflecting on the profound impact of the project on future generations. The school, which was originally a private residence before its conversion into an educational institution, has maintained a commitment to evolving and meeting the needs of its students and the community.
The renovation will not only modernize the facility but also change its physical appearance. The original porch will be removed, and the new construction will replace it, while storage areas beneath the school will be transformed into nursing labs.
As the project progresses, the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology is poised to play a pivotal role in both education and community health, addressing urgent workforce needs while honoring a legacy of innovation and support.
