Arlene Beth Antonovich Harrison, a cherished mother and community figure, passed away peacefully at the age of 89. She died in her sleep, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and dedication to her family and the San Pedro community.

Born into a Croatian fishing family, Arlene was deeply connected to her roots. Her father, Carl Antonovich, and grandfather, John Antonovich, immigrated from Korcula, arriving in the United States in 1907. Arlene, affectionately known as “Nene” by family and friends, was a lifelong resident of San Pedro and an active environmental advocate. She passionately upheld her family’s fishing heritage while nurturing a vibrant artistic spirit.

Arlene was not only a talented artist but also an exceptional cook. As a member of the San Pedro Art Association, she enjoyed painting coastal scenes en plein air from her ocean-view beach house. Her culinary skills shone during dinner gatherings, where she delighted guests with Croatian seafood dishes, including the popular hobotnica (octopus salad), paired with good wines and shared stories.

Her home on Bluff Place served as a gathering spot for numerous family celebrations. Arlene hosted memorable events such as Fourth of July fireworks displays, Christmas Eve seafood feasts, and birthday parties. Her legacy of love extended beyond her immediate family, as she embraced her sons’ friends as her own, fostering a sense of community that resonated with all who knew her.

A devoted mother, Arlene taught her four sons to swim at Cabrillo Beach, instilling a love for the ocean that has been passed down to their children and grandchildren. Summer vacations on Catalina Island became cherished traditions, creating lasting memories for the entire family.

Arlene is survived by her sons and their families: Robb Heberer (Debbe), Craig Heberer (Teresa), Karl Heberer (Julie), and Chris Heberer (Maria). She leaves behind granddaughters Heidi Linscomb (Chris), Megan Wescott, Molly Dragich (Matt), and Aubry Heberer, along with numerous great-grandchildren, including Jackson, Klara, Presley, Mars, Prim, Charlie Ann, Zoey, Hank, Mazzy, and Soline. Her stepsons, Chris Harrison and Brian Harrison (Felicity), and their children, Emma and Ulysses, also mourn her passing.

A private celebration of life will be held for close family and friends, honoring Arlene’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club, a place where her sons spent many afternoons playing baseball and engaging in community activities. Contributions can also be directed to the San Pedro Art Association, reflecting her passion for art and community engagement.

As San Pedro bids farewell to Arlene Antonovich Harrison, her spirit and influence will continue to resonate through the lives she touched and the community she loved.
