The Mexican government has taken significant action in an ongoing investigation into organized crime, freezing the bank accounts of Raúl Rocha Cantú, the co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization. This decision was confirmed by an official from the country’s Financial Intelligence Unit, which oversees anti-money laundering efforts. The freeze is part of a broader inquiry into drug, fuel, and arms trafficking activities linked to Rocha Cantú.

The investigation has raised questions about the integrity of the Miss Universe Organization, particularly in light of recent controversies. Last week, a Thai court issued an arrest warrant for the organization’s other co-owner, Jakkaphong “Anne” Jakrajutatip, in connection with a fraud case. This year’s Miss Universe competition, which was won by Miss Mexico Fatima Bosch, has also faced allegations of rigging.

Rocha Cantú has been under scrutiny since November 2024, as federal prosecutors in Mexico investigate claims of organized crime activity, including drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and fuel theft. The inquiry has intensified, leading to the issuance of 13 arrest warrants for various individuals involved, including Rocha Cantú, whose company, Legacy Holding Group USA, holds a 50% stake in the Miss Universe shares. The remaining 50% is owned by JKN Global Group Public Co. Ltd..

The ongoing situation surrounding the Miss Universe Organization highlights serious concerns about its leadership. The Thai court’s warrant for Jakrajutatip relates to her failure to appear in a Bangkok court on November 25, after being released on bail in 2023 for a separate fraud case. Her absence led the court to categorize her as a flight risk, and the next hearing has been rescheduled for December 26.

Adding to Rocha Cantú’s controversial history is his previous ownership of the Casino Royale in Monterrey, which was the site of a tragic arson attack in 2011 that claimed 52 lives. The attack was orchestrated by gunmen who set fire to the casino, and in July, the alleged planner, Baltazar Saucedo Estrada, was sentenced to 135 years in prison.

As the investigation unfolds, the Miss Universe Organization faces increasing pressure to address these serious allegations and restore public confidence. No immediate comments have been issued by the organization regarding the recent developments involving Rocha Cantú and Jakrajutatip.

This investigation underscores the challenges faced by the Miss Universe Organization as it navigates serious legal troubles while attempting to retain its status as a prestigious international pageant. The implications of these allegations could have far-reaching effects on its operations and reputation.
