Mikko Rantanen Reflects on Turbulent Season After Trade Chaos
NEW YORK — This NHL season has been a rollercoaster for Mikko Rantanen, who recently experienced the first suspension of his career. The ban came after he received two game misconducts for physical infractions, including a controversial hit that resulted in a serious injury to a fellow player.
Rantanen, a prominent scorer with the Colorado Avalanche, faced backlash after his actions during a match against the New York Islanders on November 18, 2024. During that game, Rantanen pushed defenseman Alexander Romanov into the boards, leading to Romanov undergoing shoulder surgery that will keep him sidelined for at least five months. The incident sparked outrage from Islanders coach Patrick Roy, who publicly criticized Rantanen’s conduct, calling the hit “disrespectful.”
Despite this tumultuous episode, Rantanen’s challenges extended beyond the ice. Earlier this season, he became a central figure in two significant trades that raised questions about his future and value within the league.
Trade Turmoil and New Beginnings
On January 24, 2025, Rantanen was traded from the Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes in a move that shocked many. Avalanche General Manager Chris MacFarland described the decision as a “business decision,” noting the player’s high salary demands, rumored to be around $14 million annually. This trade was particularly surprising given Rantanen’s pivotal role in helping Colorado secure the Stanley Cup in 2022.
However, Rantanen’s tenure with the Hurricanes was brief. After 13 games, he was traded again, this time to the Dallas Stars, in a deal that included young forward Logan Stankoven. Carolina’s General Manager Eric Tulsky acknowledged that Rantanen did not seem comfortable in Raleigh, indicating that it was essential for the player to feel at home, especially with an eight-year commitment expected from such a high-profile athlete.
The double-trade experience was challenging for Rantanen, who had hoped to remain with the Avalanche. He quickly learned that aspects of his career were beyond his control. The contract he eventually signed with the Stars was substantial, spanning eight seasons for a total of $96 million and featuring a full no-movement clause.
“Every tough moment teaches you something,” Rantanen reflected. “You always learn from those moments when you’re going through tough times.”
Finding Stability in Dallas
Since joining the Stars, Rantanen has thrived. With a strong start to the season, he has recorded 33 points in just 25 games, including 10 goals. His impressive performance has significantly contributed to the Stars’ potent power play, which ranked second in the league going into their game against the New York Rangers.
Teammate Jason Robertson highlighted that having Rantanen for a full training camp has been crucial for building chemistry within the team. The collaboration between Rantanen and center Wyatt Johnston has begun to flourish, reminiscent of his previous successful partnership with Nathan MacKinnon in Colorado.
Rantanen’s integration into the Stars’ locker room has been smooth. Known for his vibrant personality, he has broken the mold of the typically reserved Finnish players, bringing a lively energy that has endeared him to teammates. Tyler Seguin, who only knew Rantanen as an opponent before the trade, praised him for his leadership qualities and positive influence on the team’s dynamic.
Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan, who replaced Peter DeBoer in the offseason, recognized Rantanen’s competitive nature. He drew parallels between Rantanen and other elite forwards he has coached, noting that their shared drive for excellence is what sets them apart.
As Rantanen settles into his new role in Dallas, he is focused on leading the Stars toward a successful season. After three consecutive losses in the conference finals, he hopes to help the franchise secure its first Stanley Cup since 1999.
Reflecting on the challenges of the previous season, Rantanen stated, “Last year was nothing like I’ve experienced before. Hopefully, it never happens again. But if it does, I’m ready.” As he continues to adapt and grow within the Stars organization, Rantanen remains a player to watch in the NHL.
