UPDATE: In a thrilling season opener, Saginaw United made history by not only playing its first boys basketball game but also winning it at the newly inaugurated Saginaw United Fieldhouse. The Phoenix took down Detroit Catholic Central with a strong final score of 67-56 on October 31, 2023, marking a monumental moment for the team and its fans.

The atmosphere was electric as a sold-out crowd witnessed the momentous occasion. Coach Julian Taylor expressed the excitement, stating, “It felt good to get a big win in the fieldhouse in front of a sold-out crowd. It was an awesome feeling.” This victory avenges last year’s season-opening loss to Catholic Central, which is coached by former Notre Dame star Tory Jackson.

Saginaw United, formed from the merger of Saginaw High and Arthur Hill, previously played its games at Saginaw High while the new fieldhouse was under construction. The home court advantage was palpable as the Phoenix rallied from a 28-25 halftime deficit, scoring a remarkable 24 points in the third quarter to take a 49-43 lead into the final period.

Dionquavius “Boop” Hardy was the standout player, pouring in 23 points, alongside seven assists and five steals. Lemonte Ramon-Wiley, a transfer from Saginaw Heritage, contributed significantly with 20 points and four 3-pointers, while Terrell General added 14 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocked shots.

Coach Taylor highlighted the team’s resilience, noting, “We battled on the rebounds. Rebounds and loose balls were the difference. We made big shots, and we shared the ball well.” The Phoenix outscored Catholic Central 18-13 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

For Catholic Central, Wycell Davis led the charge with 24 points, while Malachi Clayton and Andrew Walker added 12 and nine points, respectively. The Shamrocks are fresh off a Division 1 football state championship victory just days prior.

Looking ahead, Saginaw United will face a significant challenge this Friday as they host Saginaw Heritage, a team they defeated twice last season. Coach Taylor emphasized the need for preparation, stating, “Our guys have to be ready, because we know Heritage is good.” Heritage also opened its season with a commanding 87-66 victory over Croswell-Lexington, showcasing their strength.

As Saginaw United celebrates this historic win, the community is buzzing with excitement, and all eyes will be on the Phoenix as they aim to build on their success in the upcoming game. Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses.
