Four-star quarterback Troy Huhn has committed to play for Virginia Tech, marking a significant shift in his recruitment after previously pledging to Penn State. Huhn, who ranks as ESPN’s No. 10 pocket passer in the 2026 cycle, made the announcement on Monday, reuniting with James Franklin, the former Penn State head coach who recently transitioned to Virginia Tech.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound prospect from San Marcos, California, began the day as the highest-ranked uncommitted quarterback in the SC Next 2026 ESPN 300 list. Initially, Huhn had committed to Penn State in June 2024 but decommitted on October 16, 2023, shortly after the university dismissed Franklin.

Huhn’s Impressive Track Record and Recent Visits

Huhn’s commitment to Virginia Tech comes just hours after Cole Bergeron, ranked 34th nationally among pocket passers, decommitted from the Hokies. Huhn brings a strong performance record to his new team, having completed 75% of his passes for 2,438 yards and 29 touchdowns, along with eight rushing scores during his senior season at Mission Hills High School.

He participated in the Elite 11 Finals in June, showcasing his potential as a powerful pocket passer. Huhn visited Virginia Tech officially on November 22, 2023, and drew late interest from Stanford, indicating a competitive recruiting environment.

Reunion at Virginia Tech and Future Prospects

With Huhn’s commitment, he becomes the fifth former Penn State recruit to join Virginia Tech since Franklin’s hiring. Other notable recruits include running back Messiah Mickens, athlete Pierce Petersohn, and offensive linemen Marlen Bright and Roseby Lubintus.

As the three-day signing period approaches, ESPN sources indicate that Virginia Tech aims to strengthen its 2026 recruiting class further. Top targets include wide receiver Davion Brown and safety Matt Sieg, both linked to Penn State. Additionally, the Hokies are competing with Maryland for offensive tackle Thomas Wilder, who recently withdrew his commitment from Virginia Tech after the firing of former coach Brent Pry in September.

With Huhn on board, Virginia Tech looks to elevate its program and build momentum as it prepares for the upcoming season and beyond.
