Tensions in the Middle East escalated as members of the militant group Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya admitted during interrogations to having connections with Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. The detainees, arrested in southern Syria, revealed that they received funding from these groups to carry out attacks against Israel. This disclosure came to light following an operation by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that resulted in the deaths of three Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya members in Beit Jen on March 10, 2024.

The detainees, primarily from a faction based in Lebanon, denied that Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya was operational in Syria. Despite their denial, Israeli officials maintain that the group has been collaborating with Hamas and Hezbollah in multiple assaults against Israeli targets since the onset of the ongoing conflict. Reports from Syrian state media indicate that 13 people were killed and 24 others injured during the IDF’s operation, which was confirmed by military sources.

Strategic Ambush and Regional Dynamics

Following the IDF operation, Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya reportedly set an ambush for Israeli forces during their withdrawal. According to KAN News, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa‘s general intelligence orchestrated the ambush and had previously conducted attacks against Druze communities in the area. Hamza al-Mustafa, a senior official in Syrian intelligence, claimed that Israel is attempting to provoke Damascus into a confrontation. He stated, “Israel is miscalculating when it thinks it can impose facts on the ground,” emphasizing Syria’s focus on rebuilding rather than engaging in aggression.

In response to the rising tensions, the United States is exploring the possibility of sending envoys to the region, including former State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus. The US aims to stabilize the area amid ongoing conflicts and Israeli assertions of maintaining a presence at strategic locations such as Mount Hermon along the Israel-Syria border.

Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad Strengthen Military Presence

Reports indicate that Hamas is working to establish a military foothold in Syria, supporting Hezbollah’s operations in Lebanon. KAN News recently highlighted that Hamas views Syria as a viable base for its activities, with some elements within the Damascus government permitting this military presence. Additionally, Hamas is aiding Hezbollah’s Radwan Force to enhance its capabilities in southern Lebanon, including reinforcing its supply chains for rockets.

As the situation evolves, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) is also expanding its military footprint in Syria, with these developments occurring with the Syrian government’s awareness. Recent reports indicate that the PIJ’s military wing, the al-Quds Brigades, has intensified operations, particularly around Palestinian refugee camps near Damascus.

The intricate web of alliances and military activities among these groups illustrates the complexity of the situation in the region. As Israel, Syria, and the US navigate these rising tensions, the implications for regional security remain significant.
