Discover Exciting Events at Local Libraries This December
Local libraries are gearing up for an engaging December, offering a variety of events and activities that cater to all ages. The Durango Public Library (DPL) invites community members to participate in the Page One Contest throughout January. This competition encourages writers to submit their first page of an original work, ranging from 300 to 500 words. Contest winners will receive a $100 Maria’s Bookshop gift certificate and have their pieces featured on the Page One radio program, which airs on local stations KSUT and KDUR in March. Submissions will be accepted from January 1 to January 31, 2024.
In addition to the writing contest, DPL will host regular programs designed to engage the community. The Youth Chess Club meets every Tuesday from 16:00 to 17:00, providing a friendly environment for young chess enthusiasts aged nine and older to sharpen their skills. For the youngest patrons, Preschool Storytime takes place on Wednesdays at 11:00, featuring stories and songs for children aged three and above.
The library has planned a special event on December 16 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. Attendees can enjoy tea, snacks, and craft activities, along with themed books and films available throughout the month.
Many programs at DPL are designed to foster creativity and community engagement. The Teen Advisory Group meeting on Wednesdays from 16:00 to 17:00 offers teenagers a platform to voice their interests and contribute to library programming. The library also hosts a Cookie Exchange on December 16, where participants can share their favorite cookie recipes.
For those interested in poetry, the Word Honey Poetry Workshop will take place on December 3 and December 17, allowing participants to create original works in a collaborative environment. The library also offers a Spanish Conversation Hour on December 4 and December 18 for individuals looking to practice their language skills.
The Fort Lewis Mesa Library, located inside Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School, is also hosting engaging events. The library will celebrate the holiday season with a “Stuffie Sleepover Storytime” on December 5, inviting children to bring their stuffed animals for a special evening of stories.
Sunnyside Library will feature several holiday-themed activities, including a Holiday Craft Time on December 12 and December 19. The library encourages families to participate in these crafting sessions to foster creativity and togetherness this holiday season.
Notably, all libraries will close on December 24 and December 25 for the Christmas holiday, and on January 1 for New Year’s Day. Special hours will be in effect during the winter break period, allowing families to visit from 10:00 to 19:00 on select days.
In addition to these events, the libraries are committed to providing ongoing programs, including open art studios, technology assistance, and fitness classes, ensuring there is something for everyone in the community to enjoy.
