URGENT UPDATE: JoAnn Marie Brookins, aged 78, of Ionia, has passed away on November 22, 2025, at the IOOF Home and Community Therapy Center in Mason City. Her family has confirmed that a private inurnment will take place at a later date.

JoAnn’s death marks a profound loss for her family and community. Born on April 7, 1947, she was a symbol of faith, generosity, and unwavering love. Her life journey began in Howard County, where she demonstrated resilience and compassion from an early age, ultimately graduating from Cresco High School.

JoAnn’s life was filled with significant relationships. She married James Fencl, with whom she had three children: Bryan, Melissa, and Brad. Although their marriage ended in divorce, JoAnn’s commitment to her family never wavered. She later found a deep connection with Ronald Lechtenberg, a partnership that blossomed until his passing. Together, they embraced a blended family, welcoming Ron’s children, Lois and Jim, into their lives.

Throughout her life, JoAnn was devoted to serving her community. She played a vital role in assisting the Mennonites with transportation, ensuring they could attend to their needs with dignity. Her efforts on the farm connected her to the land, showcasing her commitment to the cycles of life.

JoAnn’s faith was central to her identity. As an active member of her church, she lived out the teachings of her faith with kindness and compassion. Her culinary skills are fondly remembered, particularly her legendary elderberry and apple pies, which brought joy to many.

Nature was a significant part of JoAnn’s life; she cherished her garden, raised poultry and sheep, and engaged in trapping and hunting, activities that reflected her love for the outdoors.

JoAnn is survived by her son, Brad Fencl; step-son, Jim Lechtenberg; step-daughter, Lois Snell; grandchildren, James and Ray Bluhm; and siblings, including Valerie Pettit, Judy Brookins, Alberta Linneman, Bonnie Brookins, and brother Arthur Brookins. She leaves behind a legacy of love that continues through her numerous nieces and nephews.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her son, Bryan; daughter, Melissa; longtime partner, Ron Lechtenberg; her parents; and brothers Joseph and Roger Brookins. The impact of her nurturing spirit will be felt deeply by all who knew her.

As her family prepares to honor her memory, JoAnn Brookins’ life stands as a testament to love, community service, and resilience. Her legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire those she touched throughout her remarkable life.
