Professor Karen Leonas of North Carolina State University has been awarded the prestigious Olney Medal, the highest scientific honor presented by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC). This accolade recognizes her significant contributions to textile chemistry and sustainable practices within the textile industry.

The AATCC cited Leonas for her extensive work in promoting sustainable processes across the textile supply chain. Her research encompasses areas such as textile processing, recycling, closed-loop manufacturing, circular economy methods, life-cycle analysis, and social justice. As part of the Wilson College of Textiles, where she has served since 2013, Leonas has made a lasting impact on both academic and industry practices.

Career and Contributions

Leonas began her career at Burlington Industries before transitioning into academia. Initially focused on medical textiles, she shifted her research emphasis to sustainability at the request of her colleagues. Behnam Pourdeyhimi, Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean, noted that Leonas has innovatively utilized existing technologies to tackle sustainability challenges within the textile sciences.

Over her extensive career, Leonas has published more than 240 research papers and received numerous accolades, including the Sustainability Award and the Outstanding Extension and Service Award from NC State. Her recent initiatives include conducting Life Cycle Assessments for both new and recycled fibers prevalent in the fashion industry, supported by a grant from the Walmart Foundation.

Impact on Future Generations

Leonas’ commitment to education extends beyond her research. She has served on 60 graduate student committees, prioritizing mentorship and the development of future leaders in the textile sector. David Hinks, Dean of the Wilson College, praised her dedication, stating, “Karen has dedicated her career to advancing textile chemistry and mentoring the next generation of textile industry leaders.”

The recognition of the Olney Medal highlights Leonas’ multifaceted achievements. Her ability to leverage existing technology to address industry challenges has not only enhanced theoretical understanding but also led to practical solutions in the field. As the textile industry increasingly moves toward a circular economy, Leonas remains a pivotal figure in driving sustainable practices forward.

In acknowledging her accomplishments, Hinks emphasized the significance of the Olney Medal, calling it a fitting tribute to Leonas’ influence on both textile chemistry and broader sustainability efforts in the industry.
