URGENT UPDATE: The Nora Larabee Memorial Library in Stafford, Kansas is calling for immediate donations of hygiene items for local schools. This initiative, which continues through December, aims to support students in need during the holiday season.

Library head librarian Gerry Hildebrand encourages the community to contribute essential items such as deodorant, shower gel, shampoo, leggings for middle and high school girls (sizes XSmall to XXXLarge), underwear for lower elementary students, and boxes of Kleenex for classrooms. Donations can be dropped off at the library located at 108 N. Union St.

In addition to the hygiene drive, the library recently hosted a meeting with Jennifer Gleason from K-State Extension. The session highlighted innovative smart tools that can enhance health and safety, including smart watches capable of detecting falls and alerting emergency contacts. This critical information can aid families in selecting meaningful tech gifts this Christmas.

The library also provided insights into Medicare Plan D options. Attendees learned about significant changes in pricing and coverage. Those approaching Medicare eligibility are urged to consult professionals for the best plans, particularly during the crucial first 60 days of enrollment.

An alarming case of potential fraud was reported by a participant, prompting Kristina from Southwest Services on Aging to investigate further, underscoring the importance of vigilance in health care choices.

This week’s CBS Sunday Morning segment on family recipes sparked thoughts on preserving culinary traditions. Hildebrand reflected on a past program where gravestones featured family recipes, proposing a modern twist with QR codes linking to family histories and recipes.

The library is also hiring a maintenance person for approximately four hours a week. Interested individuals can obtain the job description at the City Office or the library. Applications are also posted on their Facebook page.

Don’t miss the next gathering of Recently Read on Tuesday, November 25th, at 5:30 PM. It promises to be an enjoyable hour filled with laughter and community connection.

The library will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and the following Friday. Hildebrand wishes everyone a safe holiday and reminds the community to reflect on their blessings. For more information, contact the library at 620-234-5762 or via email at [email protected]. Follow them on Facebook for updates and events.

Now is the time to act—your donations can make a real difference in our local schools!
