The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is gearing up for the busiest Thanksgiving air travel season in 15 years, projecting over 360,000 flights during the holiday period. The peak day is expected to be November 25, 2023, with more than 52,000 flights scheduled, reflecting a significant increase in traveler numbers as families reunite for the holiday.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford expressed confidence in the agency’s ability to handle the anticipated surge. “Thanks to the dedication of our air traffic controllers and every FAA employee, we are ready for the holiday rush,” he stated. Bedford emphasized the commitment of the FAA team in maintaining safety and efficiency throughout this busy time.

To manage the increased air traffic, the FAA will implement various traffic-management strategies and utilize advanced tools to ensure flights navigate the national airspace safely. Travelers are encouraged to visit the FAA’s Holiday Travel webpage for real-time updates on airport statuses, packing regulations, and TSA screening procedures.

Among the essential reminders for passengers, the FAA highlighted the importance of adhering to the 3.4-ounce limit for liquids in carry-on luggage. For any questions regarding what items are permissible through security, travelers can consult TSA.gov or reach out to @AskTSA on social media.

In addition, passengers are urged to verify their TSA PreCheck status and ensure they possess REAL IDs or other acceptable identification. These preparations can significantly expedite the screening process, allowing for a smoother travel experience.

The Department of Transportation has also introduced a new customer service dashboard aimed at helping travelers understand airline policies concerning delays and cancellations. This initiative seeks to enhance communication between airlines and passengers during what can be a stressful travel period.

As families prepare to embark on their journeys, the FAA has a simple message: “Remember to be patient, be kind, and follow crewmember instructions.” With careful planning and adherence to guidelines, the Thanksgiving travel season can be a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
