URGENT UPDATE: As the winter holiday season kicks off, experts warn of rising mental and financial stress. Kansas State University family resource management specialist Elizabeth Kiss emphasizes the need for families to manage time, energy, and finances to avoid overwhelming holiday pressure.

Kiss urges families to reflect on what truly matters during celebrations: “It is more about being together and less about all of the decorations and all of those things being perfect.” With Thanksgiving approaching, she highlights the significant costs associated with traditional meals, parties, and decorations, which can often lead to unrealistic expectations.

NEW DATA: A recent survey shows that more than half of holiday shoppers have already begun their gift purchasing to capitalize on deals and spread expenses. Kiss advises creating gift lists and browsing before buying to avoid overspending.

“Pay more upfront and finance less to minimize debt in January,” Kiss suggests, encouraging cash payments when possible. Keeping receipts and limiting credit card use can also help shoppers adhere to their budgets during this financially demanding time.

Kiss points out the importance of maintaining a normal routine between celebrations, especially for children. “This is a lot of stimulation for children, and they may be eating differently—maybe more sweets than usual,” she noted. Families should attempt to keep mealtimes and bedtimes regular to help children cope with the holiday excitement.

Kiss also champions low-cost family activities, such as board games and outdoor outings, to enhance togetherness without financial strain. “Make the holidays what you want them to be and be comfortable with your decisions,” she advises, urging families to keep stress levels low both mentally and financially.

TAKE ACTION: As families prepare for the holidays, experts recommend prioritizing what brings joy, focusing on shared experiences rather than perfection.
