Australia Imposes Social Media Ban on Twitch for Users Under 16
Australia’s internet regulator announced on December 10, 2024, that it will enforce a ban on social media platforms for users under the age of 16, with Twitch, a popular video livestreaming service, being the latest addition to this list. This initiative follows a significant legislative measure passed by the Australian Parliament aimed at safeguarding children and teenagers from potential online risks, including cyberbullying and mental health issues.
The eSafety commissioner stated that Twitch qualified for the ban due to its focus on online interaction, which is a core feature of the platform. In contrast, Pinterest, a virtual photo board, was not included in the ban, as it did not meet the necessary criteria for user interaction. This decision highlights the nuanced approach taken by regulators in identifying which platforms warrant restrictions.
Back in April, the eSafety commissioner identified several major platforms, including Meta’s Facebook, Threads, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X, YouTube (owned by Google), Kick, and Reddit, as subject to age restrictions. The commissioner indicated that this list could evolve, with platforms potentially being added or removed as technology develops and user engagement patterns shift.
As the implementation date approaches, the eSafety commissioner confirmed that no additional assessments of platforms are planned in the three weeks leading up to December 10. Under the new law, social media companies bear the responsibility for enforcing age restrictions. Failure to comply can result in hefty fines of up to $32 million AUD for companies that do not adequately remove underage users from their platforms. Importantly, neither children nor their parents will face penalties for any violations of this ban. Nonetheless, concerns remain regarding the effectiveness of these measures, particularly regarding how children might circumvent the imposed restrictions.
Twitch, owned by Amazon, has become a prominent platform for gamers, allowing them to stream their gaming sessions to millions of viewers worldwide. In addition to gaming content, users can also access cooking videos and political commentary. The platform’s popularity makes the new regulations particularly significant, as they will impact a substantial number of young users who engage with the service.
As Australia continues to refine its approach to internet safety for minors, the implications of this ban on Twitch and similar platforms remain to be seen. The ongoing dialogue around online safety is critical as the digital landscape evolves, and regulators aim to protect the well-being of younger users in an increasingly connected world.
