Rian Johnson has revealed an ambitious plan for a new iteration of his hit series, Poker Face, featuring Peter Dinklage in the lead role. During the premiere of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery on October 16, 2023, the acclaimed director expressed excitement over the potential re-casting of the amateur sleuth character, Charlie Cale. This announcement comes after the exit of Natasha Lyonne, who originally portrayed Cale, and the decision by Peacock not to renew the show for a third season.

On the red carpet at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Johnson shared his enthusiasm with Deadline, stating, “It’s very early days. We’re gonna see if we can take it out and get it going.” He emphasized his admiration for Dinklage, highlighting his long-standing desire to collaborate with the actor. Johnson added, “It’s a wild swing, and I just feel like it could be so much fun, going forward with the show.”

In a joint statement, both Johnson and Lyonne mentioned that they have been developing this idea since writing the season two finale. They believe this new direction could be “the perfect way to keep it rolling.” Johnson’s vision involves evolving the show by introducing different actors for the role of Charlie every few seasons, allowing for fresh storytelling and character dynamics.

Season 2 of Poker Face concluded as one of Peacock’s most-watched series, but it faced challenges regarding production costs and a slight decline in ratings compared to the first season, which garnered critical acclaim and multiple Emmy nominations. The show follows Charlie Cale, a former casino employee with a unique ability to detect lies. After witnessing a crime committed by a casino boss, she goes on the run, solving homicides across the United States in her vintage 1969 Plymouth Barracuda.

As Johnson explores the potential of Dinklage stepping into this role, the future of Poker Face remains uncertain. The upcoming adaptation represents a significant shift in the series’ direction, but Johnson’s creative vision suggests an exciting path forward, should it materialize.
