UPDATE: A mother’s quest for a supportive environment for her autistic daughter has led her to a new life in Málaga, Spain. Candice Smith, 47, made the pivotal decision to relocate from Florida to Europe in 2018, seeking deeper connections and a more fulfilling lifestyle.

Smith’s journey began after a painful divorce, leading her to travel to Europe for healing. Her first trip to Paris in 2015 ignited a desire for a fresh start. “I’m moving here,” she told a friend during a visit to Rome, ultimately securing her Italian residence in just eight weeks. Smith packed up her life, including her daughter and pets, and moved to Italy, marking the start of an extraordinary adventure.

Living in three different countries—Italy, Turkey, and now Spain—Smith has faced challenges but has discovered invaluable support for motherhood abroad. She emphasizes the importance of learning the local language, stating, “You can get by without it, but I’ve never understood how someone can live in a country for years without speaking the language at least to some degree.” This was crucial when she faced a devastating personal loss; her mother tragically passed away from COVID-19 in Turkey, and her local friends stepped in to provide essential support.

In her new home in Málaga, Smith appreciates the accessibility and community support for families with disabilities. The city, with a population of over half a million, has proven to be a safe and welcoming place for her daughter, who continues her education through online courses while embracing world schooling methods.

Smith has found an affordable two-bedroom apartment for just €1350 ($1,571) a month, complete with amenities like a swimming pool and tennis court, only a short walk from the beach. This move has allowed her to pursue independent work, co-founding a company called Her Expat Life, focused on curating events for women living abroad.

Reflecting on her experiences, Smith highlights the significant role that supportive environments play in motherhood. “I don’t feel guilty about prioritizing my daughter,” she states, emphasizing the unique understanding and community spirit she has found in Spain.

As Smith continues to navigate her journey, she embodies the resilience and adaptability needed for a fulfilling life abroad. With each move, she not only enriches her own life but also provides her daughter with opportunities to thrive in diverse environments.
