UPDATE: A funeral is scheduled for Monday, November 13, 2023, for WakeMed Police Officer Roger Smith, who tragically lost his life in a shooting last week. The Garner Police Department confirmed that Smith, aged 59, was fatally shot on November 8, in the lobby of the WakeMed Garner Healthplex located on U.S. Highway 70.

The suspect, Benji Martin Jr., aged 29, faces murder charges in connection with Officer Smith’s death. He was also injured during the incident and is currently receiving medical care while in custody. As the investigation remains active, specific details surrounding the shooting are still under wraps.

The funeral will begin at 10:25 a.m., with law enforcement escorting Officer Smith’s casket and family from Mitchell Funeral Home to Providence Church. Glenwood Avenue will temporarily shut down to allow for this solemn procession. At 10:45 a.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol’s Caisson Unit will transport the casket to the church, where the funeral service is set to start at noon.

Following the service, an interment will take place at Pinecrest Memorial Park, located next to McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton. In a show of support for Officer Smith’s family, they have requested that donations be made through the 200 Club of Wake County. This organization provides financial assistance to the families of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty, ensuring that all contributions directly benefit Smith’s family during this difficult time.

This tragic incident has left the community mourning, as Officer Smith was dedicated to serving and protecting the people of Wake County. Residents and fellow officers are encouraged to attend the funeral to pay their respects and honor his memory.
